Home Care

Home Care – for those  in the middle or at the end of overseas assignment

At HealthLink360 we recognise that overseas living can give rise to physical health problems or to emotional stress which emerges on return home for a number of reasons. Among these may be adjusting to a change of role or to the relative wealth of UK society. Young people who have grown up in a different ‘home culture’ can also find this a difficult time.

Whilst you may be able to register with a General Practitioner, he/she is unlikely to have the time or relevant expertise to address all your concerns.

With this in mind we offer our Home Care package which provides a thorough medical and psychological review/debrief if you are mid-assignment or finally returning home. Both components are recommended as part of our ethos of providing ‘whole person care’. With experience we have found that most people benefit from an opportunity to review their time overseas and discuss any issues faced. Although many sending agencies do offer ‘debrief’ time, a personal review with an outside agency can provide freedom to raise more personal concerns in a safe, neutral environment.

Home Care serves the needs of

  • Sponsoring Agencies and churches who wish to enhance and maintain their partner’s/family’s resilience in placement
  • Individuals/families who wish to remain fully prepared for life in their chosen location
  • Adults, children or young people who are adjusting to life back in the UK after living or working overseas or in another cultural setting

Home Care:

  • Provides a full medical review and personal debrief for all the family
  • Gives confidence that your physical and psychological health have not been compromised while on placement
  • Offers structured support for you to review and reflect on your service experience

Home Care Medical Assessment

This is a full medical assessment for all ages, tailored to the individual which:

  • Addresses specific health issues that have arisen overseas
  • Identifies potential health problems specific to the individual’s environment eg exposure to schistosomiasis – a fresh water risk  – particularly in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Enables preparation for the next part of the assignment if applicable, updating vaccinations and preventative health care measures
  • Includes standard tests, stool and urine testing and tropical screening as appropriate. Additional tests eg ECG or Chest XRay carried out if necessary

Home Care Personal Review

This provides a confidential and reflective space  with an experienced, professional counsellor in which you may review your time overseas including work, relationships and any issues faced. It aims to be structured but person centred with room to discuss any particular worries or concerns. No report is sent to the agency unless specifically requested by you and the content agreed.

It can include:

  • Administration of a therapeutic tool that measures your current satisfaction
  • and frustration. This gives an indication of current functioning and is followed by a time of structured reflection
  • Dedicated time and space to reflect on all aspects of overseas living and future orientation

Our psychological services team is skilled in dealing with children and we have found that even quite young children (8yrs and upwards) enjoy and benefit from their own ‘talk time.’
