Trauma & Critical Incident Debrief

Any situation in which you are overwhelmed by powerlessness and a lack of autonomy is likely to be traumatic. Such situations can include personal assault or robbery, witnessing violence to others, road traffic accident or being caught up in warring factions. Medical issues such as life threatening illness or miscarriage can also be traumatic.

If you or your group have been subjected to such a situation while working overseas or in the UK,  it may help to consult one of our counselling staff specifically trained in Critical Incident Debrief accredited by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation.

It is important to know that not everyone who suffers trauma will experience symptoms of post- traumatic stress disorder. Also the effects can vary, but often include feelings of fear and anxiety, nightmares and flashbacks, panic attacks or unexplained and sudden heart racing and sweating, sleeplessness and lack of concentration. Often there is a pattern of avoiding certain situations or people, being easily startled or experiencing suicidal feelings.

Critical Incident Debrief is a structured process that allows individuals to process trauma. It is widely recognised in helping to reduce the psychological disturbances that may be experienced after witnessing or being victim to a traumatic event.

If you find that after experiencing such a situation you are unable to sleep and are increasingly fearful or anxious we can help you talk through the issues.

For many people this process is all that is required to get back to normal life. For some others it may be a longer process and in this case our experienced staff can offer ongoing trauma counselling.
