Gap or volunteer trips

Planning a period of personal development & unique opportunity?

teaching English as a foreign language in China?
a round the world multiple destination tour?
volunteering in an orphanage in Uganda or an animal sanctuary in Borneo?…

Living and working among local people overseas provides a wealth of cultural and personal experiences but in many destinations may increase the risk of ‘close contact’ diseases such as meningitis and tuberculosis or serious blood-borne infections like Hepatitis B or HIV.

Additionally, longer stays increase the risk of acquiring an infectious disease. A longer stay may include higher risk seasons for certain diseases eg Japanese Encephalitis in areas of South East Asia.

Rural areas and basic accommodation can increase the risk of insect borne diseases like Yellow Fever and malaria or food and water borne diseases such as Hepatitis A and Typhoid.

At HealthLink360 travel clinic our team of medical and nurse specialists have both personal and professional experience of working overseas and have developed high levels of expertise in:

  • advising travellers on longer term assignments abroad
  • complicated itineraries
  • long term anti malarial protection
  • working cross culturally

We provide the following services:

Pre-travel

  • A travel consultation with one of our travel health specialists includes
  • A risk assessment tailored to the individual
  • Country specific, up to date advice on recommended vaccinations, anti-malarials and particular health risks
  • Advice on managing any medical conditions and general health abroad
  • Provision of in-house advice leaflets and useful resources

An appointment should be made at least 4 weeks prior to departure or 6-8 weeks before if requiring, for example, a course of Hepatitis B or Rabies vaccination.

Post travel

Post-travel Check up

Many tropical diseases only present weeks or months after exposure. Our post travel check up offers a 30 minute medical dealing with specific travel health issues eg Bilharzia or stomach problems.

Returners Medical Assessment

  • A full medical tailored to individuals returning from assignments overseas
  • Addresses specific health issues that have arisen overseas
  • Identifies potential health problems specific to the individual’s environment eg exposure to schistosomiasis – a fresh water risk – particularly in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Includes standard blood tests, stool and urine testing and tropical screening as appropriate

Personal Review

For some people their overseas experience may not have been easy. A personal review provides a confidential and reflective space with one of our experienced, professional counsellors to review your assignment and the issues you have faced.

Several sessions may be arranged as necessary.

Trauma counselling

For those suffering from the effects of trauma and needing ongoing support we can offer an expert and compassionate service. The length of care and intensity of the work is tailored to your needs.
